4th of july

I generally cringe inside at the idea of going out to see fireworks on the 4th, and for the past 2 years I was relieved that there were clouds and/or rain to use as a solid excuse for staying home. Hear me out….I am not unpatriotic, I am not someone who won’t venture out or doesn’t want to leave my house.  But, I live in Annapolis, MD so it’s always really hot and humid on the 4th.  And, it’s always super crowded; although I live less than 5 miles from historic downtown, I know that the traffic to get out afterwards is gridlocked.  I don’t like standing on a hot sidewalk, shoulder to shoulder with mobs of others, waiting for and then watching a mediocre fireworks display.  It has always felt underwhelming.  And when I think of the environmental impact of the fireworks….uggh!  I’m just not a fan.

This year was different, though.

A few years back we found a secret rooftop to watch the fireworks from (amazing views, no crowds, nice breeze) so we went back there….with our dear family friends.  And even though the fireworks themselves were mediocre at best, we were hanging out with good people.  And that made all the difference.

So, lesson learned.  Surround myself with good people, people who make me laugh, people I can be real with….and the mundane becomes a small adventure.  And life should be a collection of small adventures, right?
